The tapes and Ms.Tripp need to be discounted and vilified by Clintonistas for the very reason that they show just what type of person currently occupies the WH in striking and clear detail. JLA

"In fact, I had never even thought about the independent counsel in my wildest dreams. My idea was I'm going to arm myself with records so when I'm in a position to speak under oath, I can do so truthfully.

Carl, who was she going to speak to under oath, if not Starr? But she never thought about it, even in her wildest dreams! She said that to the grand jury, under oath! Note also, she said when, not if, about speaking under oath. My small mind has the usual hobgoblin problem on this one, especially given the proximity of the two sentences.

Bilow, you're exactly right!!! As a matter of fact, it was Clinton's attorney, Bob Bennett, who went on National TV and called Linda Tripp a liar!!! He is the REAL reason Linda Tripp started to tape the conversations and he set off her wrath by calling her a liar ON NATIONAL TV! All roads lead back to Clinton!!! And now James Carville wants to go on National TV and attack again! Don't these people ever learn?

Carl, I think to believe Linda Tripp's cover story about why she made the tapes is really to go very far in self deception.

Now, like all good cover stories, it has an element of truth to it. Linda Tripp DID expect a showdown with the President's people, and did know that without some powerful backup like the tapes, were word would indeed be questioned. Especially since the subject matter was so deeply personal and the type of thing the mainstream press is ordinarily not inclined to want to delve into.

But the point is that Tripp began making the tapes very early on in their relationship. Much before she was called as a witness in the Jones suit. Why was she so sure she would be called to testify about her Lewinsky conversations unless she herself expected to have at least a hand in revealing the Lewinsky affair in the first place.

At the very least I am quite convinced that Tripp made the tapes, and manipulated Monica, so as to have a marketable and highly lucrative book deal, through Goldberg.

I think they were both also motivated by a deep hatred of the President, and a desire to bring him down. Tripp for reasons more of personal resentment of a frustrated and discarded woman, generally. Goldberg for more ideological reasons.

Goldberg may well have been acting in concert with the groups funding and directing the Jones suit. I don't know. It would be very interesting to find out.
