Their backing out a conference like that can mean a couple of things:
1) They will face earnings questions- or atleast hints. These conferences are to give finance people a non-technical perspective to technology. It all ends up being financial and market talk anyway. My take is that the "Alex Brown Technology Conference" means Alex Brown is hosting technology companies for investors to assess. The people at Alex Brown are not engineers... by the way!
2) Do they have a major release coming up? If so, that could be in jeopardy. They will ask about futures and new functionality, new releases.
3) They are being super conservative on both fronts. What I take it to mean is that there is going to be some surprise on the Oct. 20. Either they are going to get blown out of the water or report better than expected. What they don't want to do is tip the market in either way, so they are reducing the likelihood that this will happen.

Just speculation
