Melissa, here's a fairly upbeat view of the future:

One area in which I strongly disagree is the discussion on disinflation. As I see it, the problem is that many developing countries are dependant on commodities such as oil and timber. With the currently depressed prices they simply are not generating the revenues required for the sustenance of their domestic economies, which, in turn, decreases the demand for manufactured goods and services from the industrialized world.

One very positive note. Malaysia is expected to pull out of its recession in 1999.
