Do you favor any Small Cap Mutual Funds at this time. Which Funds have a good chance of riding a November wave after the October tax loss selling is complete?

Justa,re:small caps. I've noticed this also and today the S&P was up 0.6% while the Russell 2000 was up 2.8%. I have a bunch of the SF fund formerly known as microcap but today I was looking around for another small cap fund to add also. the only problem for me is I'm FULLY invested and I would hate to sell SPYders or something to pick up a capital gain for 2 months in a small cap fund. I'm not anxious to go the index route since I think good managed small cap funds like good managed foreign funds have a good chance of substantially beating the index. Also once these small cap moves get underway I believe I recall the outperformance tends to be a multi year affair. I cheked Fasciano and it sounds like they'll have about a 5% distribution. Got any funds in mind that won't pay much of a distribution? I didn't think it would be hard based on the dismal recent performance.

Justa wrote: "The first stocks out of a recession are the small caps and if a recession does not materialize then so much the better. "

Justa,
I too am very interested now in the question of the small caps, given the history-making values. Let me pose an argument: They are the first to show life out of a recession. But we are not in a recession. In fact, we are in a long-standing bull market. Late stage? (Although many have been bleating that we're in the late stage of the bull for years!) The small caps may very well languish for some time still and might require a true bear market to set the stage for their recovery.

What say you? Anyone else?

Ciao,
David

>small stocks that have announced buybacks during the last quarter and have the cash to follow through are also good candidates.<

I have thought the same thing. I know at least one company where that announcement was all it took for the stock to take off. I scan the news for companies announcing buybacks but don't find much. Do you know of a good place to go on the net to learn which companies are making such announcements?

Justa:<<I am extremely BULLISH on the small caps. Mutual funds which specialize in these issues should be purchased now IMO before the herd. >>

Justa, I am also bullish on the small caps. See my post from the other Brinker thread below. Jeff

<<Chase Manhattan Bank, one of the nation's largest banks, today cut its prime rate to 8.25 percent from 8.5 percent. Norwest in Minneapolis had lowered its prime after the Fed's move.>>

As most of you know, Bob has stated that the outlook for small caps. has never looked so good. It is my feeling that the cut in the discount rate is a major positive for them. Am I off base or overly optimistic about this news and its impact on the 15% of my portfolio that is in small caps? Thanks, Jeff>>

P.S.- CNBC says Abby Cohen is now calling for a 12 month target of 1250 for the S&P 500 (I assume DOW 10,000 ?). On the 10 Oct. 1998 show, Bob was looking for 6 to 12 month targets of 1210 & 9500. CNBC also said that she will probably be made a full partner at Goldman Sachs (announcement pending on new partnerships)
