Not quite. i think the average MF has an expense ratio of about 1.35%. That's $135 off the top of $10K. I use waterhouse which is about in the middle fee wise of most discount brokers. Four or five trades at $12 per is $48-$60. That's less than 1/2 what it would cost with a MF.
The other thing to consider is that with a MF or UIT every thing gets dissolved once a year and then restarted which is very good for Uncle Sam and bad for us. Buying the four or five stocks you don't have to liquidate all of them every year. Most of the time it is just two or three which is much better for the tax picture.
