Some of us don't make distinctions between brutal dictators who call themselves leftist or those who call themselves rightist.

Which community do you include in the "us" part of your statement. Certainly not your fellow reporters. Generally, they absolutely do make these distinctions. Pinochet is a murderer. Castro, it is constantly point out, has fed and educated his people.

>>I question your commitment to human rights when you applaud Pinochet while harping on dictators of nominally Communist regimes

Gee, I guess the Left lies so often we can't even accept what they say when they call themselves communists? At least we know that these Leftists were the real thing when it came to being mass murderers.

The Left rallies against Pinochet for the supposed few thousand that they allege he was responsible for killing as he defended Chilean society from their plans to kill far far greater numbers in their conspiracy to install an illegal Marxist dictatorship.

I would love to find just one on the hypocritical Left calling for an examination of the TENS OF MILLIONS killed by the totalitarian Left during the 20th century. Or calling for Castro to be tried and brought to justice for what he has done to the people of Cuba, and to other states in Latin America and Africa.

>>who may actually be brought to account for their brutality
based on the precedent of the ex-General's case

That's genuinely funny. The same socialists that want to try Pinochet for restoring democracy in Chile have argued against trying former Communist heads of state like Eric Honecker, the mass murdering totalitarian head of the former "Democratic" Republic of Germany, who had to toppled and exiled.

As most commentators have noted, Pinochet's moves saved far more innocent lives than they cost. That should be applauded. Such cannot be said of any on the totalitarian Left.
