Zoran gets a SVCD win in China.

Zoran's SupraAV SuperVCD Decoder IC Selected by Wyan - China VideoCD Pioneer; Now Shipping Throughout China

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 3, 1998--Zoran Corporation (NASDAQ:ZRAN), a leading provider of integrated circuits and software for digital video and audio applications enabled by compression, announced today that one of China's leading manufacturers of Video Compact Disk (VCD) players, Wyan Electronic Systems Co. Ltd., is shipping Zoran's SupraAV(tm) decoder IC in Wyan's inaugural SuperVCD (SVCD) player for the China market.

Wyan introduced China's first VCD player in 1993 and spurred the unprecedented growth of this market to more than 15 million units in 1997, making China the world's largest market for digital video. By adopting Zoran's SupraAV, Wyan is once again leading the Chinese market into the new SVCD standard, that is replacing the previous VCD standard. The Wyan SVCD player is now shipping in volume throughout China.

"Wyan is a pioneer and a leader in the development of VCD and SVCD players," said Dr. Isaac Shenberg, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Zoran Corporation. "Zoran has worked closely with Wyan to develop a feature-rich product, matching Wyan's existing reputation in the VCD market. The SupraAV decoder is our key product for China this year and we are delighted that a pioneer in the VCD market chose our leading-edge solution."

"Zoran's SupraAV decoder offers exceptional quality, a rich feature set, and is easy to use," said Mr. Wan-Meng Jiang, President of Wyan Electronic Systems Co. Ltd. "We had our SVCD player up and running within weeks. Our affordable SVCD player is ready to sell in the rapidly growing SVCD marketplace and is fully compatible with the previous generation VCD standard."

With 15M VCD units sold in 1997, VCD is one of the fastest growing video consumer markets worldwide. By offering superior video and audio quality with full backward compatibility to VCD at a comparable price, SVCD is gaining rapid acceptance as the replacement for the VCD market. SVCD is a China government standard supported by the key Chinese manufacturers and decoder vendors, including Zoran.

Right I like it to. This is an entirely different beast that a recordable DVD.

I think it's cool and if Carnac is right the coolest thing about it is that it is Cube based.

I still disagree with your assertion that DVD won't take off until it's recordable.
