Joe,Nothing wrong with that. Other folks have made their bread and butter on other platforms. So be it. Yes, and I'm sure the choice is easy for them.. you see the kinds of things i like to build are just so much more potentially lucrative when you have a huge user base to sell to.IMO, languages and OSs are going to be changing in many more ways that we can imagine. IBM just bought out SCO. I think SCO is big on PC UNIX systems. I don't know how legit IBM's strategy is, but it's a big move on their part and they will probably pump lot of $$ into beefing up UNIX, How many times has this thing been owned by different folks now. IBM is the last one that we needed to get into UNIX IMHO. I would like UNIX so much more if it was standard.. that really should be the next thing that is done with UNIX in order to make it more palattable.. I mean look at Linux, there are no less than 5 different versions (maybe more).. that's too much of a nightmare.since NT definitely is vulnerable in certain areas Wait till you see NT 5.0.. it has a lot of fatures that rival UNIX.. actually NT 5.0 is really well built and exposes a lot of functionality that until now has been buried because it simply wasn't ready (NT is very powerful if you know where to dig, for example did you know that NTFS supports links ala UNIX, yup it does.. you just have to know about it ;-), same with mount points )IMO, LINUX is going to be MSFT's biggest competitor. Not because I'm in love with LINUX, but the concept of open-source software can be pretty powerful. Yes and pretty damned scarey for 90% of the population. Geeks like you and me have no problem with it, but the general public would be absolutely terrified at the idea of having to rebuild the kernel to include support for their sound blaster!I suspect MSFT will somehow overcome it, but it will be fun to watch and hopefully it will improve OS technology across the board. This is the only good thing about the UNIX/NT wars.. it's pushing both systems forward from beyond where anyone ever saw them going and I think that's great. One thing though. The speed of changes in technology are coming faster and faster, and it's nuts to try to think anyone has a hold on it. That's partly why I think this MSFT court trial is BS. This MS thing is BS.. that's the truth. Everyone was saying the same thing about IBM before MS came along.. everyone will say the same thing about whoever knocks off MS.. and so on.. it happens and the best thing for the government to do is stay the &*() out of it IMHO.. (ps Microsoft is doing the same thing every other company is trying to do, that is put the competition out of business, they are just too damned good at doing it)Tech to me is a tool, it's not a way of life. I would like to expand on that a little. Tech is a tool that impacts the way of life.. Steve
