I have an ISDN line from Pacbell. It took about three weeks to get the whole thing installed. I used their HomePak. It works pretty well. ADSL is the future but it wasn't available in my area. My understanding of ADSL is that is uses copper. That means your existing phones lines should work. you'll probably have to have two phone lines installed and there is a chance of crosstalk with older copper wiring but much easier than DirectPC or fiber. TCI's cable modems are still vaporware...

Well you seem to be confusing cable modems and ADSL? To the best of my knowledge, there is no cable modem service available in San Francisco, though it could be available in outlying suburbs. (I believe it is due to older technology in SF, which still needs to be upgraded). Meanwhile in areas where @Home is avaialable, I think the rates are $40-$50 a month. ADSL on the other hand starts around $90 for 384K access and goes up with speed. ADSL is available in SF though.

Michelle -
DSL 'rides' on existing copper to your house, but it is an entirely different signalling scheme so it does not conflict or interact with your existing POTS lines. At higher speeds the DSL line has to be less than 12,000 feet total length which means that the phone company has to decode and combine somewhere within a couple of miles of your house or you can't get the service. I paid $200 installation and $60 / month for 384K service but the ISP link is included at that price. I also have ISDN service - the DSL seems a little faster but most times I am limited by other factors. Theoretically it should be 3 times as fast as ISDN dual line on downloads.
