I don't remember every getting such service at a "bricks-and-mortar" store. What I remember instead was, "According to our computer, that book is out of stock and we don't carry it. Sorry...."

FWIW, I had been looking for a copy of an out-of-print book. Amazon located a copy after almost a year (!), and offered it to me for ~$20. I balked at the price (not sure why). I then noticed an out-of-print locator service at b&n.com. They had a copy available to sell to me directly from an associated bookstore, for ~$27. This is better service (I balked again), and I hope Amazon can improve their ability to locate such items in the databases of their friendly associate bookstores...

Let me relate to you my recent e-commerce experiences. In the last two weeks I have purchased books on line twice. My methodology: open two windows one on Amazon and one on B&N. I then purchase from whichever provides the lower price (B&N in both cases). Over time most consumers will do the same. How is AMZN ever going to make a profit when this kind of buying pattern is only going to get worse (for the sellers, better for the buyers)?
