John - Re: " they did not talk about 'modern', they talked each morning about 'uptime', system problems, etc. Keeping the major systems up and stable was paramount.... "

If their existing systems were "SO STABLE", why did they have to think about UPTIME and SYSTEM PROBLEMS EVERY MORNING ?

Sounds like their existing systems also have a lot of room for "improvement".

John, >>>The 'key' in my opinion is not necessarily 'more modern', but 'stable and robust'.....they talked each morning about 'uptime', system problems, etc. Keeping the major systems up and stable was paramount....<<<

I wouldn't underestimate the complexity of 'keeping the major systems up'. The reason for it, I beleive, is that each of these new systems iterations S390, S370, S360, S1401, et al had to be backward compatible. In which case, there had to be a lot of compromises, work around, and plain old quick and dirty patches (I'm sure Tony knows all about those things - and where the bodies are hidden ggg).

Most of the CIO's haven't a clue what the problems are - they rely on Tony and the old boy network to keep those systems humming. This house of cards has a pretty good foothold in the IT universe.

It is totalitarianism versus the new order. It is the old entrenched buearacracy versus openness, democracy, truth, justice, beauty and the American way.

It will not be easy to clean this stuff out - but it will eventually have to go. It will not happen overnight - but it will happen.

Regards,

Mary
