< I was wondering if you made a prediction for the market to go up so strongly in the last couple of months >

I've been Bearish and I have not personally participated in the current rally. Valuations are outrageous at these levels for me. I did mention to Fred ( and a few other people ) after the surprise second interest rate cut that I thought that the indexes would hit new marginal highs.

< What has happened? >

Clearly, the interest rate cuts have provided liquidity for the Banks, Brokerages and Hedge Funds to unwind their positions.

< How's your gut feel for the first few months of 99? >

I am extremely Bearish for 1999. We are in the midst of the most widely speculative blow-off in the history of the U.S. Stock Market. I have no idea when this blow-off will end. But when it does, watch out below. What took place last summer is an omen and preview for 99.

< Do we go past 10,000 or back down in the 8,000 range? >

I plan on entering some short positions at 10,200. My current portfolio is 80% Cash and 20% long in Gold Mining Stocks. Typically, the Market pushes the price of Gold considerably higher, along with the Gold Mining Stocks, after the last interest rate cut. I think Greenspam will continue to lower rates aggressively. His goal is to re-inflate the economy. Will he succeed? As long as the stock market continues to rise, investors will spend some of their profits. In this aggressive mode of easing, the question is not if but when in 99 will Gold surge?

< What are factors that could put us up to 11,000 on the upside? what is the one thing that could drag us back down to 7500? >

It is a speculative blow-off, Stak. Even 12,000 is possible here. Interest Rate Cuts are extremely bullish for the stock market. The question is whether they will help corporate earnings. My answer is no. I expect Brazil to default on their debt in 99, setting off a whole Latin American debacle, similar to Asia. I feel we will break considerably below 7400 in 1999.

I've had my best year in the stock market this year and I feel no need to participate in this madness. I'm positioning myself now for a profitable 1999.

Cube:

I'm watching Cube very closely here. I expect to see 35-36 soon. I will be watching for some churning before I enter my short position. I'll be sure to let you all know when I enter my short position.

P.S. I bought recently 3 Dell 450 XPS for myself and for my two younger sons. The DVD player is GREAT! Magnificient! What unbelievable sound and picture quality! We are in the Movies and on Broadway every night around here with my big 20 inch computer screen. I now send Voice E-Mail messages. Windows 98 is unbelievable. The IE browser is great and super quick and doesn't crash anymore as it did on Windows 95. Netscape had no choice but to sell out. I wonder how wise it was for AOL to buy Netscape? Why would anyone in their right mind use Netscape with Windows 98? It's clearly an inferior browser.
