<<Yahoo could copy it, perhaps, but it is another example of why the company that got there first has such a huge advantage>>

Apple Computer "got there first" too. Dell came late to the game and is beating the pants off them all. Bottom line is we'll need to wait and see how the Yahoo site develops. So far they've proved themselves to be ingenious marketers. I believe that those who ply their goods at Ebay will also ply the same goods at Yahoo. It's free to list on Yahoo, it costs to list on Ebay, i.e., if it's free to list your goods, you list them, especially for a site like Yahoo. Brownie buttons work for first grade, but tend to lose their meaning when money is involved. You may be right. We'll see.

J.C. Re:"cleverest features of the eBay site is the feedback system ... the various "gold stars" awarded to users (buyers or sellers) for positive feedback...Yahoo could copy it"

I think that feature has been around since the auction was at onsale's site--just click on the feedback link under seller.

Another concern for ebay is once the buyer establishes a relationship with one of these sellers, ebay can be bypassed on any future transactions to avoid the fee. For these resellers, ebay is more or less cheap advertising that reaches lots of people.
