Well said, as is Starowl's response. I hadn't considered the "multiplicity of devices" argument, and it is a good one. However, I think USB may take the scanners away, and tape drives, etc. may soon have IP addresses rather than SCSI ID's. Disk drives, because of their demanding bandwidth requirements, will be SCSI's best hope, but even they may be network connected soon (including "inside the box").

For Adaptec to do well with SCSI (and my impression is that they have been triaging away other bandwidth solutions), I think they need to bring prices down more aggressively than they have in the past, and to dramatically improve SCSI's ease of use (e.g. w.r.t. cabling, termination, and configuration).
