Can also do this with Airtouch and a few others. QCP-820 phone has email on it too. Use it for mnessages as an alpha pager. Can have things like Airmedia send you an email every 15 minutes on stock quotes or baseball scores or impeachment votes.....or have something like one of the online quote services send you email when a stock sell or buy limit is reached, trade confirmations....lots of apps for this.

Since CDMA is just data, it uses the short message service, which is a text feild in the control channel used for sending messges up to 100 characters in length. the carrier translates your phone number into an email address and forwards it from the email service to the SMS service.

Surfer Mike,

If you send the message directly from the web site, it gets delivered almost instantaneously. The 20 minute delay maybe caused by the delay in your office e-mail or on Sprint's receiving side.

Anyway, it is pretty cool. All we need now is a higher resolution and bigger text displays. 4 lines by 12 characters is kind of crude. The little wheel on the QCOM phones makes things a lot easier.

Mike:

Text messaging is a very cool feature. Does Sprint give offer it as a pay service like Bell Atlantic, or is it free in the San Francisco area?

One of the reasons why I chose AT&T Wireless was b/c they offered Text Messaging for free. You just email the person at xxxxxxxxxx@mobile.attnet

Mike,

Sprint PCS text messaging also works in the backwaters of Southeast Florida on my Q-1900. You must have been off getting another honorary PhD in Orthogonal Turbo Codes when this was previously reported on the thread.

Jim
