I come back from a wonderful run through the brisk late-autumn air to find not a retraction as I had hoped but--Yuck! You reveal yourself as little different from the demented freaks who post pictures of obstetricians and gynecologists on their Web sites, crossing a photo out when one is assassinated by some "sharpshooter." Sure, there are plenty of treasonous bastards on the right who advocate the killing of Clinton and other acts of political violence; and maybe the SOBs even got JFK. The point is, truly decent, tolerant and enlightened people do not descend to that level of rhetoric. Some conservatives earnestly believe that what Clinton has done merits an impeachment. I respect the arguments of the less rabid ones, though--based on my interpretations of the Starr report, the Judiciary Committee hearings, the Constitution and impeachment precedent--I absolutely do not agree with them. Never would I advocate or even think of shooting any of them over this overblown soap opera. There are rare times perhaps when one's conscience may compel one to take up arms in defense of a cause or a person. But I think neither defending Clinton nor the bankrupt institution of the U.S. presidency merit marching in the streets (as I have in support of gay rights, foreign policy issues, and a woman's right to choose), much less openly advocate a paramilitary campaign. In the end, I say let the Tweedledee and Tweedledum parties cannibalize each other so that all's left on Capitol Hill are bones and lobbyists' business cards. I will not allow myself to be dragged down with them. Anyway, the type of political violence you suggest has been attempted in Western Democracies. Witness Italy's Brigade Rosse, or America's homespun Weather Underground, or the Mercedes of leftist terrorism, the German Red Army Faction, a.k.a. the Baader-Meinhof gang, which used laser-activated precision weapons to hit their targets and trained in Libya with Palestinian groups. Without exception, all these psychopathic bourgeois dilletantes did was spread a lot of needless fear, discredit legitimate non-violent political groups who advocated some of their ideas, and gave a ton of rhetorical ammunition to the right. But at least those creeps issued notes AFTER they committed a terrorist act, they didn't spout off about them beforehand in hopes of suckering some deranged, mentally unstable "Oswald" into doing their dirty work.
