The Senate "trial" is anything but a court of law.
Every day people are "let off" for all kinds of serious crimes. It's called plea bargaining.
They are anguished because he is their President and don't dare take away our right to elect him over sex, lies and audio tape.

if the Senate let's him off scot free every lawyer in the country will use the case to protect their client against perjury.

You are confusing your cases, It is not the Senate's job to determine if the President has committed a crime. It is only their job to determine if he has committed the specific crimes of bribery or treason. Ordinary crimes of a personal nature can be persued once he is a private citizen.
