Christine,

There are some new, very predatory germs around.

Some of the old ones are pretty predatory as well. Here in the tropics infections can arrive and spread with a speed unbelievable to westerners, and I've seen several Americans, all devotees of natural healing, brought to very serious condition by their own refusal to take antibiotics soon enough. Coral cuts and anything acquired in the jungle are particularly dangerous. I also use hydrogen peroxide for the initial cleansing. A frequent followup is to crack open an antibiotic capsule and deposit the powder directly into the wound - it keeps it dry, which antibiotic ointments don't. Any fever, swelling of glands, etc., and a full oral course has to be started immediately, especially on puncture wounds. Sounds excessively reliant on that modern pharmaceutical stuff, I know, but I've seen an overscratched mosquito bite turn into a full scale tropical ulcer in 24 hrs., and it's nasty. The little buggers really do eat flesh.

Steve

I may have the title of the movie wrong. It is either the way I printed it, or the title doesn't have an "a" at the beginning. It stars Jason Robards, Jessica Lang, Michele Phiffer, and has a whole host of other actors which play lesser roles. I probably wouldn't know whether or not it was a film that was recommendable or not because I don't use the same criteria when deciding whether a film is good or not. Depends mostly on whether I liked the story line or not. Bottom line: I liked it.

It is about a guy (Robards) who has farmed a large piece of ground all his life and has been in his family for three generations. Then he decides to turn his farm into a corporation and give each of his three daughters an equal share. The movie is mostly about the ensuing problems because of his decision as well as situations incurred by the three sisters.

When I say crying, I don't mean tear stained faces...I mean bawling as in gut wrenching anguish. Was that the way you meant referring to the film you saw Christmas Day?

"There are some new, very predatory germs around. What is that bacteria that eats flesh, for example?"

There are loads of issues that have come up since the last time I read this thread, but the responses--even after a day or two--must seem to refer to ancient history by now. Christine, you need two or three threads for the different topics by now!

However, to this I will respond. I am sure that to many the flesh-eating bacteria exist only in a headline for "The National Enquirer." Would that it were so! A year and a half ago, a close friend's mother, who seemed otherwise healthy, complained of a sudden pain in her leg. Within hours she was hospitalized because the pain had grown so intense. It was flesh-eating bacteria, devouring her at an astonishing rate. Helpless to stop the onslaught, the hospital amputated her leg to try literally to cut them off "at the pass." She would have been in agony without heavy painkillers and sedation. She was dead within a couple of days. This illness is real.
