I would be interested in hearing about your experience in the writing group...what was the issue? It's too bad that you couldn't find common ground with the person who took it personally...but I'm well aware of that particular unfortunate situation. "Groups" are not my cup o' tea for that very reason...
I have a way of being opinionated that can tend to alienate anyone who disagrees with me and I'm not always "diplomatic"...most people are interested in avoiding conflict. I've always been interested in confrontation...not in a negative sense, but rather in the spirit of awareness or consciousness. I'm a "do unto others" kind of person and I expect a certain amount of regard from others. But I'm also limited by my humanity...I am quick to pre-judge and stereotype people...and escalation is my specialty! I don't enjoy flaming.
SI is the only place that I cyber-socialize...I'm just not into the "chat" thing. When I got into the "coffeeshop" Clinton threads, it was because I could not sit on my hands while this National Farce unfolded...I was sucked into the Phenom....and as usual, my passionately held opinions were greeted with anger, violence and ridicule...It's a predictable pattern. I thrive on the adversity...it's my own personal Iditerod. We are fortunate to be able to agree, disagree, agree to disagree...and still appreciate each other's point of view. I think that it's more a reflection of us as individuals...there's always gonna be an element of society that refuses to elevate the dialogue...I'm often reminded of the playground in 3rd grade...I much prefer real communication, too.

I saw the back half of Brokaw's special last nite...still trying for the book. Did you see it? I feel so sappy sitting there all choked up with the remote, but that Man's regard for His parents generation consistently moves me to tears.
