Question about reduced margins:

When many brokerage houses increased the margin requirements of inets about a month ago, did those increased margins apply to currently held positions, or only to new positions?

In other words, if MM's impose a "no margin" rule on all internet stocks, will that result in an immediate margin call to anyone who currently holds inets on margin? Or will it simply prevent further buying of inets on margin?

Thanks for anyone who has a guess.

They just killed the goose that laid the proverbial "Golden egg" (or maybe I should have said "EGGS"). The internets have kept buoyed the trader from the overall market. They have given us something to go long in when the rest of the market was falling. Now that is over and traders will be more ruthless shorting the market now. The party is over.

What's really incredible about this dropping of the margin on all the internets is the January effect. As you have posted in the past, January sets the tone for the whole year. Are they ("The powers that be") going to ignore the January effect and kill the market now or wait till February to do the deed?

<<No more margins what so ever on internet stocks ,, either long or short,, >>

Sounds like grounds for a major lawsuit to me. Either by shareholders hurt by such action, or the companies that would be effected themselves. Think YHOO, EBAY, or AMZN are going to very happy about seeing their market caps cut 80% over night?

Mike

I think it will be wonderful to drop all margins on the net dudes ...
what the MMs are trying to do is to make the net dudes fall, why ???
either they are covering their heavily short position or accumulate for the next move up ... we can all just play along by shorting or buying puts ... I bet after they accumulate enough, of course, by then the price will be much lower, then they can again open up the margin ... and up she goes again ... what a wonderful game it is ...

They might stop margin on nets, but it doesn't make sense to me, MM's and brokerage firms make a killing on trading nets on margin, why would they want ot cut off their own feet?
If they do stop margin on nets, why a drop in them? I don't see this. Many shorts would have to cover which would run the price up at the same time some longs would have to sell, I see a balance.
It will be interesting to watch if it happens.
