1) Yes. these are the women in men's lives, however temporarily. They are no longer "targets".
2) and 3) These things help. The longer the relationship, the more they help. But look at the universal phenomenon of older rich guys dumping their capable but old wives for some twentyish Barbie. You can't say these guys traded up in the smarts/achievement categories.

Maybe how much these things matter is one mark of the quality of the man as a partner. Opinion?

If these decisions were based on any kind of logical process, all your assumptions would be correct. They generally aren't, at least not as far as I've seen.
