Steven:

For most applications, such as word processor, spreadsheet, the clock speed is not so important. I use mine at home for internet. A 300 Mhz PII saved me a few hundred bucks.

Steve, Games are by far the most strenuous application for PCs. You don't need 16 Mbyte 3D graphic cards for word processors and spread sheets. I'm actually kid of surprised that you didn't get the kid the 400 MHz unit.

Ed

> I'm anything but an expert on PC markets, but I use them all the time. Not long ago my 8 year old son wanted to use my nice new 400 Mhz Pentium II to blow up spaceships. I used his Celeron 266, and did the things I normally do. I couldn't tell the difference. Whatever speed advantage existed was minimal, at least using the applications I normally use. <

A few of us have been making this point for over a year. (g) Add in the fact that there are no new applications, and one has to wonder why the corporate sector would be motivated to buy the hot expensive machines as opposed to the low cost but equally effective machines. Answer is that they aren't and won't, in spite of what the nerds try to suggest. M.I.S. types are moving up the learning curve. (g)
Sometimes the most simple piece of common sense takes a while to sink in. Like the fact that business isn't buying PCs like they used to and probably won't until a new reason is provided. It's right there in the flood of warnings from the reseller market, but the lambs can't read (g)

Best, Earlie

steve, That has long been one of my points. Especially for business. A 400 mhz Pentium II does not type any faster than a 286. And it is only minimally faster on accounting. However, it is better for some applications which most businesses, or, at least most folks at the businesses, never happen to use.
