Tech2000,

You can run Netscape or IE stand alone as long as AOL is running.
Just dial in to AOL, then start up your browser application instead of running the browser that comes with AOL.

I actually like AOL because it allows me to communicate with my friends and family with the 'buddy chat'. But the only reason I don't have an ISDN line right now is that TCI, my cable supplier, is offering cable internet via @Home in my neighborhood later this month.
So I also am limping along with AOL as my ISP.

t2k, clarifying my earlier comments, I do not believe csco will post blow out numbers a la msft; it's not their style. They will come in at estimates or +.01. But their p&l will be marvellous, their revenues will be fantastic, and the market will respond to the indication of health in the internet infrastructure sector. Despite your comments on their service, aol will blow the doors off due to increased membership and booming ecommerce. And dell will just plain kick butt.

aol is a great isp/content provider for newbies, and once you've started on them, you're hooked for a variety of reasons (see my post Message 7023699 for my cut at it>. But it is cumbersome for experienced surfers.

Frank

BTW--I don't like AOL--- I mean the internet service. I have been
on it for under a month. Could not get the MSFT conference call. It
appears they use the customized "AOL" browser (IE). I hate it.
Going back to AT&T soon.

If you're using Win95 or Win98 you can check to see if NetZero at netzero.com has an access number in your area. NetZero is a free internet service that puts a little movable ad window, about the same size as the normal banner ad on most web pages or the stinking pop up window on GeoCities pages, on your screen. You use their software to invoke the dialer and then use whatever browser and email software you want. I set my low-tech brother-in-law in Tucson up with it and he's happy as a clam. He connects at about 42kbps. I don't use it because I dial out through my Linux machine so my wife and I can share the internet connection on our Win98 machines.
