Scumbria, "Intel also said it will turn off the feature by default for Pentium III chips that haven't already been produced and distributed to the world's computer makers."
A little at a time. ;-)

they said Intel's software concession still was inadequate.

''You still have the problem of an ID number, and Web sites can force people to disclose that ID number as a condition to get into the sites,'' complained David Banisar of the Washington-based Electronic Privacy Information Center. ''Just having a software patch does not resolve the underlying concerns.''

I think David Banisar is being way too alarmist. How many Web sites out there are going to force people to disclose their ID number? First, that would eliminate all the traffic from people without Pentium III systems. Second, it would eliminate all the traffic from users of non-Intel systems like AMD and Cyrix, assuming that AMD and Cyrix don't add the CPU ID thing. Third, any Web site that forces the disclosure of the ID will be labeled a "Big Brother" Web site, further reducing the amount of traffic it gets.

The first and second reasons aren't going to apply if the Web site only forces the disclosure of the ID from users who actually have CPUs with IDs. But the third reason still applies.
