ESS Technology Announces Audio-Modem Design in New HP OmniBook XE Notebook PC
SuperLink(TM) Technology Enables Industry Standard V.90 Internet Connectivity
FREMONT, Calif., Feb. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- ESS Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: ESST - news) announces a design win for its Maestro-2EM(TM) audio-modem SuperLink technology chipset in the Hewlett-Packard Company's HP OmniBook XE notebook PC. The ESS audio-modem solution enables quick Internet access and advanced multimedia capabilities.

Based on the Maestro-2EM digital audio accelerator, the ESS audio-modem solution provides industry-leading high-performance audio with V.90 data and fax connectivity. The ESS chipset features a 500 MIPS multimedia engine, full ACPI support, a hardware wavetable synthesizer with Downloadable Samples (DLS) and complete DOS legacy compatibility. ESS' audio-modem solutions also comply with Microsoft's® PC98/99, DirectSound® and DirectSound3D® standards.

''ESS' multimedia and audio technologies are integral pieces in the new HP OmniBook XE Notebook PC,'' explains Laura Demmon, product marketing manager for HP's Mobile Computing Division. ''We can now provide high-performance desktop capabilities in a reliable, mobile notebook PC.''

''We are pleased that HP selected our audio-modem solution for this new high-performance value line of notebooks,'' states Dave DeMarinis, director of strategic marketing for ESS. ''As our products consistently demonstrate the best connectivity and throughput rates, we will continue to enable more full-featured, cost-effective products.''

The new HP OmniBook XE notebook PC, with an estimated U.S. street price of approximately $1,499, is designed for quick Internet access, multimedia capabilities and a sleek, industrial look. With an all-in-one design that incorporates a hard drive, floppy disk drive and CD-ROM drive, the HP OmniBook XE Notebook PC eliminates the need to transport and swap additional components. External control buttons enable users to play music CDs without powering up the computer, while the contoured surface makes it easy to remove from a carrying case. The notebook comes pre-loaded with the MyYahoo! Business web site, allowing users to personalize a virtual office, complete with relevant news, stock quotes and a free email service.

ESS' SuperLink modem chipsets have been tested by an independent test house, Henderson Communications Laboratories, the international leader in data, fax, cellular, ISDN and xDSL testing. When compared to modems from other modem suppliers, including Lucent, Rockwell and US Robotics/3COM, the ESS modem chipsets -- both Digital Signal Processor (DSP) and Host Signal Processor (HSP) -- ranked the highest in both connection speed and data throughput.
