As many of you may know, Belize has been in fairly wide ranging discussions with Cuba about a number of aid issues. The Belizean Ambassador in Havana, Amalia Mai, has been talking on the Channel 5 News about the progress of these discussions. It seems that housing aid has been an exciting area of discussion. I thought that this portion of the report was quite interesting as it lays bare some of the Belizean Government thinking about the housing plans there:Q: "What in terms of housing, you mentioned housing as one of the agreements, what exactly will be done in the housing field?" Amalia Mai "Okay we're looking at Cuba to help us with a factory to build four hundred houses per year , which of course could be more than that because the factories can build two houses per day. The program is going to run for five years, so we're looking at four hundred houses per year for the next five years at the minimum." http://www.channel5belize.com/news/archive/8-2-99-news.shtml It seems that the plan is to build these housing construction factories where they will build prefab cement houses for deployment there in Belize. So according to this report, this Cuban factory will create 2,000 houses over the next 5 years. But wait, there's more. Tonights report on Channel 5, had even more good news from Havana. . . . we had initially started negotiation on one plant, one factory, and now the Cuban government has been kind enough to throw in another one. The Cuban Government has committed to a second factory, doubling their capacity, and apparently bringing that total number of houses to 4,000 over the next 5 years .
