Another K6-III and PIII comparison

Nothing new here. K6-III is the king in business applications, PIII is king in gaming/multimedia.

They did one lighting and transformation test that compared the gains due to 3D Now! and SSE enhancements. 3D Now! increased performance 83% while SSE increased performance 72%.

Here is a clip -

"What is interesting here is that 3DNow! appears to be more efficient than SSE. At least, it makes more
difference to the K6-III than the SSE does to the Pentium III, which leads me to believe that 3DNow! is a better
set of instructions. In fact, I have talked to some people who are familiar with assembly, and they commented
that 3DNow! was indeed more flexible than SSE when dealing with smaller amounts of data. That of course
remains to be seen, and I personally must admit that I don't have enough knowledge to comment on that. But,
still, the benchmarks gave 3DNow! a more than 10% lead over SSE, leaving the impression that once again it all
goes down to the fact that Intel's FPU has a better performance than AMD's."

To be fair, before we assume 3D Now! gives a better performance enhancement, don't we have to take into consideration that since the K6-III has a weaker FPU, it is more likely to gain more?

Kash, I have posted about what the "potential" reliability issues (TDDB and
HCI) are with raising the operating voltage. I don't know what the exact
gate oxide thickness is for the AMD .25um process ... thus I can't
definitively state that there will be a "reliability issue". Can anyone
here post the current .25um AMD gate oxide thickness ?? ... It must be
thicker than Intel's.
