Simple - first you have to realize that the corporate world was not ready for the concept of V+D in any form until recently. Knock about 1.5 years off, add in the normal sales cycle and there you go.

I suspect DSL's penetration is already many orders of magnitude higher than BT's. I realize BT is not the same as DSL but for some applications they do seem to be competitive, somewhat interchangeable technologies. From some of the postings here one would think that DSL is a pie-in-the-sky idea that is years away. I don't know how well US West is doing with their roll out or what the other phone companies are doing but here is a sampling of the press coverage pertaining to US West and GTE . I suspect US West spent more on newspaper advertising for the introduction to the Phoenix Metro area alone in the 3rd quarter of '98 than the entire global marketing budget for BT that quarter.

"...The MegaBit Services initially are available to about one-third of US West's subscribers in the Phoenix area...US West intends to expand the service to as much as 85 percent of the populations of Phoenix and Tucson, Ariz., and in parts of Utah by the end of the year."

4/20/98 US WEST OFFERS FULL DSL SERVICE IN PHOENIX
redherring.com
"Plans call for the service to be available to 400,000 Phoenix households by year's end. "

4/24/98 GTE,US West Will Boost DSL
zdnet.com
"The service will be available in June from 300 points of presence in 16 states, said officials of GTE Network Services, based in Dallas."

Anybody know a reliable source for the actual number of DSL subscribers?

If, as Marshall states on his profile page,
"Be There! Multiplexing "the last mile" is the most logical solution until xDSL can make some significant penetration."
then the window of opportunity may already be closing for BT.
