Jeff, Amy, re: W/W PC penetration
One of the problems is we tend to look at raw numbers and not demographics.
Over half of the world population has serious issues of infra-structure, discretionary spending and need.
A good example is India, a country with 1/6th of the World population. (930 million).
Yet Intel estimates PC sales to India at 1.5 Million units in the ending year. While India statistically represents fertile ground for PC growth, there are many underlying reasons for the slow adoption rate.
The US, of course, represents the opposite spectrum. PC penetration in the work place has essentially saturated and is primarily an upgrade market. Even in the home, ownership has reached 50% of households and probably represents less than 50 million potential new users, including multiple PC ownership. In this country I think the key to PC sales is obsolesence and upgrade.
BTW, one of the most interesting statistics I found was from IDC. According to them, forty percent of home web users are age 12 - 17!
Jeff, regarding "shrink wrap" PCs in grocery stores. I think you were being facetious. Probably more like stacks of boxes at Best Buy next to the VHS and CD audio players. ;-)

Jeff - Re: CPU ID .."Any you better have your ID enabled or you won't get in!"

You have MISTAKEN CPUID and Processor Serial Number.

All Pentiums - dating back 6 years or more - have CPU IDs.

Even the NOBLE AMD K6's have CPU IDs.

An x86 instruction, CPUID, when executed, will return the PROCESSOR DESIGNATION - Pentium, or Pentium MMX or Pentium II, Pentium III etc.

When you boot your PC, did you ever wonder how the BIOS knew what kind of CPU was plugged into your computer?

I suggest you go to the Intel Web Site to learn the details of the Processor Serial Number.

Paul

Jeff -

re: PSN

Although you have some very good points against the inclusion of the PSN in Intel's CPU's, consider the benefits of having it from a business point of view.

While we have become used to receiving free software and services (information, etc.) over the internet, in the long term companies will find it more and more difficult to continue providing these things for free (especially if they're relatively high value-added). If the PSN allows software-oriented businesses to rely exclusively on the web for distribution it should have a dramatic positive impact on web usage both for business and for the consumer.

I, for one, am happy to pay for the value I receive over the internet. If the PSN is necessary for providers to become comfortable using the net as their product delivery vehicle, then I see it as a plus.
