Remember Maxtor's agreement with ampex? Is it still in effect?
Just guessing, but I wonder, (hope)is this is related in some way.
JMR

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Merrill Lynch & Co. upgraded its investment opinion on disk drive
maker Maxtor Corp. (MXTR) to near-term buy from near-term accumulate.

The firm's long-term rating remains accumulate, according to a research note.

Merrill increased its price target on Maxtor to $16 from $15.50. "The shares are trading at a steep
discount to our new price objective," the note reads.

The firm said Maxtor is making the transition to the next-generation giant magneto resistive heads,
known as GMR, which "increases confidence" in its 1999 outlook for the company.

DrD,
interesting speculation! I too suffered through the whole KM period.
What I'd like to see is AXC get into EMC's pants. EMC just keeps growing in the data storage area and so is the stock price. We got a little run but it didn't last long enough. I think most of the investors have given up on KM and so has wallstreet. Some of the IBM developments in data storage seemed to beat AXC to the market. If we get a market correction, we may be holding for a long time.....Got any more good news..
Thanks,
PhdPete@aol.com

Another narrowcasting player, in an obvious niche:

vcall.com./

From their site:

"Vcall overview

Launched in 1st quarter 1998, Vcall enhances the distribution of investor relations events – empowering companies with a cost-effective, timely means to reach the diverse investment community, and to do so in their own words. Vcall is a value-added Investor Relations (IR) communications service that "Internet broadcasts" significant investor relations conference call events such as quarterly earnings reports, new product launches, and M&A announcements to investment professionals, institutional investors, and individual shareholders. Vcall also provides an excellent value in other important investor communications, such as investor conferences and shareholder meetings.

Vcall has quickly developed a network of over 15,000 investors that have registered to use our website and we have presented investor communications for over 60 public companies."

There are probably other companies entering this market. This is good- when narrowcasting becomes widely known, this will eventually lead to more interest in TVontheWEB and AXC.

To Ampex Investors,

In the previous message, I described several recently granted patents, that were issued to Ampex. In so doing I mentioned a certain missing function, i.e. a MR head optimized to work with a KM magnetic storage system. I further speculated that the "MR head" (#5,830,590) might be used to fill that bill.

However, as I looked further into the arsenal of patents of Ampex, I found the actual "missing link", just recently issued, Feb 9, 1999.
Patent #5,870,260 "Magnetic recording system having a saturable layer and detection using MR element." Date filed, May 23,1997.

Taking into consideration all of the previously mentioned patents, all the pieces are there.

The fruits of this fundamental research can be drawn upon, when and if needed, as the requirements for more and more storage capacity escalates. Which will surely happen as VOD, streaming media, come online and TVonWebb increases its channels...etc.

Also, as the magnetic density continues to increase, there comes a point where thermal degradation begins to occur. At that point, KM could be utilized to help alleviate that problem, for ANY magnetic storage company that has the problem, creating possibly additional revenues for Ampex.
