He also has a very large extended family upon which to draw from for promotion in the course of periodic purges. So, he has redundancy there also. Even if Saddam is toppled, the outcome may or may not be favorable. We have past experience in the Middle East to remind us.

One more possibility Neocon. We have systematically targeted his enemies for a genocide for nearly a decade. Bush set up the sanctions to cause enough awareness for the opposition forces that they were not secure under the Saddam regime that they would revolt in reaction. I doubt that he would have left the plan unchecked for a decade. At this point over 5000 children under the age of 5 from the villages are dying from hunger and treatable disease each month. Their parents and grandparents are suffering and dying in proportion. I have never heard an explanation of the benefits of this from clinton or even media coverage. Its a black hole in 1999. I suspect when the numbers are in history will consider this the most gruesome mass murder by any US strategist. Its kind of hard to successfully organize a coup under these conditions.
