Marc: Small cap funds are an enigma with Russell down over 5% for the year and S & P up over 5%. I am of the camp that believes either the small cap rallies or the large caps decline. Based on the negative performance of the Russell 2000, I believe the latter scenario is more likely in the short term. The non-confirmation of the Russell in the recent rally leads me to believe this is a false large cap rally with no real legs and that we are still in a correction phase. The valuation disparity is really amazing between the large and small caps and it is growing.

I would look at that fund to see what its performance has been in an up market as opposed to a down market to help better gauge whether it is worth keeping. It may be a beta blaster to the upside if the small cap environment turns favorable. The price you might be paying is a beta meltdown in a down market like the one we are in for the small caps.

Marc,

"I am rapidly losing what little patience I had for MNMCX."

I came to that point 3 weeks ago. Tired of waiting.

My prediction is that Roger Honour is gone from Montgomery as he has his fill of the BS at Nationsbank.

I lost my patience over quite a few managed funds. They just can't seem to beat the index.

Best wishes,

I2

Marc,

Funny you make this post. I just sold my entire position in that small cap fund. Bought it because of BB but I can put the money somewhere else. Was thinking of Disney or Compaq or Walgreen. What do you think ????

Vanguard Small Cap Growth Index (VISGX), which mimmicks the S&P Barra Small Cap Growth index, is similarly down. As of March 3, Potomac now has a small cap index fund with a 1.5 x beta of small caps, Potomac Small Cap Plus (POSCX) - which should make for a good roller-coaster ride.

marc u: re:< rapidly losing what little patience I had for MNMCX >

Year 1998 Total Returns = (MNMCX +7.5% vs NEASX -2.9%).

YTD 1999 Total Returns = (MNMCX -13.6% vs NEASX -5.5%).

In response to a caller, I recall Brinker saying that a couple of stocks in the MNMCX portfolio "blew up" in early 1999 - ie. PeopleSoft ?). I also recall Brinker saying that in his opinion the consolidation of Small Cap Opportunities Fund into MNMCX would not materially impact performance.

I too hold MNMCX - both in taxable and IRA accounts. I share your concern MNMCX which had performed reasonably well through 1998 (Total returns of 28.7% in 1995, 19.1% in 1996, 27.1% in 1997). Tax consequences of selling a taxable account for MNMCX are an important consideration to me since I've held the account from the beginning. On the other hand, it would be a shame to give back prior net gains in the event of a sharp correction.
