I hope they get their money's worth. I have to assume that spending so much money has come via a strong recommendation from their ad agency. I wonder how long the ads will run and how frequently. Branding is one of those things that you can't go half way about it; it's all or nothing. I wish them all the luck, but wonder if the money would not be better spent on printed and web ads as well as creating developer loyalty. $20 million is almost 10% of their market cap and a good chunk of their cash. I guess this is where we'll see what the management is made of.

Incidently, the weekend edition of New York Times' magazine (whatever that insert is called) had a very good article about Amazon.com. I recommend reading it. Even if you are not interested in AMZN, the article provides good insight into effective advertising as well as brand creation. I have only known of one other company that displayed such management talent (they went up 20 fold over a 30 month period and fell 80% over the next 12. But I still like them). May be 3Dfx management should read that article too.

20 Million is certainly a large sum but I have to believe that they expect the quarter to be pretty decent to support that kind of number. Just saw the commercial - what a laugh - excellent. Regardless, you have to admire their "Go for the Gold" attitude and guts. We've always said they were too conservative in the past (i.e. not putting out their roadmap, NDA's, etc.) but acquisition of STB and now top notch TV commercials to get the message out is serious aggresive. I bought this stock looking for at least a triple given the high amount of risk. They're playing my tune. Joe C.

Hello all (that's if anyone remembers me),

Curious hasn't anyone visited the new 3dfx site and viewed the commercial?? Went back a few days and haven't seen any comments in the headers.

Does anyone else think the Flash presentation at the site is a better commercial than the actual commercial; and what's with the little girl?

Well, TDFX has been in my periphery for sometime now. Time to take a closer look, I'll be reviewing 3dfx and this thread for the next couple days or so and will post if I deem my thoughts worthy.

Oh, re the Iomega comparison, I saw some "Fool" made a similar note.

Before this becomes a negative drag on TDFX, please NOTE Iomega's advertising campaign was a HIGHLY successful one. Demand was stimulated to such a degree that the campaign had to be pulled, as a result of Iomega's under-calculated forecasts and its consequent lack of preparedness in meeting that demand. If I recall correctly, they didn't even own or control a single factory and all production was outsourced.

If anyone was there, remember the waiting list for drives?

Now, the only speculative question to be derived from the above is whether a similar fate might befall the 3dfx/STB combo??

Anyway, good luck to all in Round 2.
