You can do that with NDB too. You can sell a security you don't have. It will show up as a short in your acct. I have a funny story: One day lance ICQed me with a ticker that news was going to be out on within the hour. I placed the order and screwed up up by placing a sell order for WXYZ. It showed up as a short in my acct. Of course, I was terrified at the time because news was due out. I got on the phone and straightened it out.
