Brooks, I believe they do do this, at least for the accounts they generate directly, although maybe not for those or most of those they get through banks. They generate ach debits intended to charge bank accounts on the same day the payment is intended to arrive/be posted. In this case is is not unusual to find that the payment cannot be collected, in which case they need to get the money back from the payee, or collect from the payor. The "magic" in the system is the ability to know who has NSF'd previously, and then use checks drawn on the customer account instead of paying using their funds. Also, they can identify large payments and use checks when the system forsees too much risk. I think!

That guy is an ignorant, bombastic and dangerously uninformed person. Either that, or I am. (A possibility I am willing to admit -- but believe to be very unlikely. At least the ignorant part.

I was at a chfr presentation about EBPP and if my memory serves me correctly, chfr does pay bills out of its account. Multi-step process (ckfr to biller, payor to ckfr). If the check bounces, then there is (biller to ckfr) and the biller has to collect on its own...

I could be wrong, does anyone know for sure?

I believe the gentlemen who posted that message is either a 1)former Intuit employee or 2)former CheckFree employee. I'll check into it. Nevertheless, he has been a rather reliable poster on the alt...quicken newsgroup and IMHO, his opinions have been somewhat accurate.

I believe CheckFree's proprietary pay anyone system uses a risk-based model that decides whether a bill is paid electronically direct from a consumers account, with a group check, or with a paper check drawn on the consumers account.

Until they resolve the NSF question, the lead times may not be adjusted unless they change their lead time philosophy to factor in the amount of the transaction.

IMHO, "the devil is in the details", with a pay-anyone ability, and this ability is another barrier to entry that keeps CheckFree #1.

Regarding Quicken tech. support, they've adopted a model which is the only way that they can effectively compete with Microsoft. The bottom line is that a few number of Quicken users have abused the free tech. support which increases Intuit's expenses to an intolerable level. Unfortunately, this seems to be the trend in the software industry and...another reason why a completely integrated customer care system is very important!

Regarding Quicken 99, R4, I downloaded the new version as well. I believe they (Intuit) should give more details as to what changed from the previous version.
