>> .. and i would suspect that this was part of today's rise...

The timing of the press release and TDFX's rise do coincide, so you may be right.

I am a bit confused about DFP. As far as I know, you don't need any special graphics cards to use any of the DFP monitors in use today. Is this not the case? If so, what is this new standard suppose to do and where does 3dfx fit within in?

On another note, it seems that monitor technology has come two full circles around; from analog (old ones), to digital (EGA), to analog (VGA), to digital (DFP) again. I guess you will never go bankrupt specializing in AD conversion chips <G>.

The article from Firing Squad, if at all true, would not make me a happy camper. If 32bpp coulda been stuck in the current architecture, why didn't they do it from the start? If it was that complicated, then why not just put it into their next part (as originally thought)? If V3 4000 is their next part, then it better have geom accel! But per the article, that might not happen until the end of the year...

I take the article with a bag of salt, but still, I would rather hear rumors with better news (though the sooner they get a 32bpp part out, the better...and the Dell news, if true, would be good.

Regarding OEM sales, if we are capacity constrained, we should be able to raise prices...but with OEM deals and a part which is not extraordinary compared to the rest of the market, we can't raise prices...except at retail. But to make our product hot and quick for the OEMs, we didn't make V3 the best it could be for the 'enthusiast'(retail market). Kind of a catch 22.

Oh, and if we wait for Geom Accel support in DirectX....I will be pissed! We MUST be first to market with GA(low end), and we must have exclusive support for it via Glide.

whew, i'm glad 3dfx was had a hand in defining the standard. when i first heard of LCDfx i was worried that 3dfx had jumped the gun before the spec had been announced. glad to know they knew what they were doin all along. Which brings me to suspect the nVidia implementation of their "lcd interface"

with regards to flat panels:
The current generation flat panels take standard analog from the video card and passes it through an analog-digital converter before displaying it to the screen (i think it also does some other conversions / transformations to the signal, not quite too sure), but the result is the conversion process tacks on hundreds of dollars to the price of the monitor. The DFP standard is designed to get rid of that conversion step and lower the price. And as usual, there were two competing standards before today. With 3dfx on the winning standard, i wonder where nVidia is.
