As I understand it, the controversial part is not that there have been catastrophic events that have reordered the biological world, but that this is the normal mechanism. The whole idea of PE is to deny the notion that there is anything like progress in evolution, and therefore that the so- called higher order animals, and ultimately man, represent a kind of "goal".

By the way, on the software part,Darwinian evolution is not the mechanism by which software is refined. There is an overarching intelligence that evaluates and searches for solutions, and thus improves the software. He is called the programmer. If there is someone analogous in the development of species, he is called God.
