Each woman wants the best she can command.

The operative word here is command, and this is why so many women settle for mediocre men. They would rather have a mediocre man that adores them and views them as inherently superior, and can thus be commanded, than a superior one who would dare to treat them as an equal. The safety of knowing that a man is theirs to own and control outweighs the ego-gratification of association with superiority.

Please note that I said "so many women", not "all women".

One of the most powerful traits of the fitest woman (whose genes will survive) is the ability to see fitness in a man whom other women don't recognize as excellent. One woman I knew, DB, ordinary looking and of average intelligence, cultivated the friendship of a short, blind ugly man who was brilliant in the extreme -- a Ph.D. in chemical engineering (he did many kind things to me a lttle boy to whom he owed nothing). He couldn't drown the unfit Scottie pup with spots of disqualifying white. Neutered it was given to us and we loved Suzie 20 years. He had no choice but to marry DB (she kept other candidates away), they lived a long productive loving life together. Their single beautiful daughter married an ugly tall and brilliant engineer, whose children were amazingly able and quite beautiful. I (and nature) thought DB played the mating game most brilliantly. I hope all of their genes survive and flourish.
