Bottomline Technologies and PeopleSoft Form Alliance; Leading ERP Vendor Delivers Bottomline's PayBase 32 Payment Technology Package to Global Customer Base

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. & PLEASANTON, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 8, 1999--Bottomline Technologies(R) (NASDAQ:EPAY), the premier provider of electronic payment solutions, today announced that it has entered into an alliance with PeopleSoft, the global supplier of enterprise business application software, to provide Bottomline's PayBase(R) 32 product suite to PeopleSoft customers.

The agreement enables organizations to utilize Bottomline's PayBase 32 suite, which facilitates electronic commerce by offering Internet-enabled electronic payments and receipts, LaserCheck(R) writing, and check-fraud avoidance tools, with PeopleSoft's applications for a comprehensive ERP and financial solution. By providing a seamless exchange of information, the joint offering enables organizations in the corporate, manufacturing, retail, government, education and high-tech/electronics industries to manage and execute all types of payments, and to share real-time financial data across the enterprise.

"Historically, we have often consulted with customers to help them utilize our software with PeopleSoft applications, and we have found that the combined solutions work efficiently together. With this alliance, we will be reaching a much broader scope of organizations, to provide them with the advanced functionality of our PayBase product suite," remarked Dan McGurl, President and Co-Founder of Bottomline Technologies. "PeopleSoft applications manage information that is vital to the top manufacturing, technology and retail corporations around the world, and Bottomline's PayBase suite completes the crucial financial end of the ERP loop. The combined solution will enable our future customers to increase productivity and enhance customer service via a more powerful, integrated supply chain system."

Joint Solutions Offer Flexibility, Power

Easily integrated with PeopleSoft ERP applications, PayBase 32 provides organizations with a streamlined solution that consolidates and manages payment/remittance functions. Disbursements -- from tax, claims, and payroll to A/P, A/R and expense reimbursements -- are originated from the corporate desktop and sent electronically via the secure Automated Clearing House (ACH) network. For customers with check printing needs, the LaserCheck system delivers an efficient and cost-effective operation which converts blank security paper to checks, complete with signatures, logos, custom forms and MICR lines.

"We chose to partner with Bottomline Technologies for their exceptional product functionality and strong track record in the payment technology field," said Mike Sofer, product strategy manager at PeopleSoft, Inc. "We look forward to bringing the joint solution to market."

Providing Value to Customers

The alliance provides Bottomline and PeopleSoft customers with an integrated, consolidated approach to payments. Currently, Bottomline's PayBase 32 is utilized in conjunction with PeopleSoft solutions by many organizations, including Bestfoods, Gillette & Company, Papa John's, and Vlasic Foods International. As Tom Stucki, Manager of Systems Planning and Control for Bestfoods remarks, "We wanted a flexible, powerful disbursement system that would integrate easily with PeopleSoft and allow us to process payments across our widely-distributed enterprise. We've been quite pleased with Bottomline's software and what it's done for our payroll processes."

Does PeopleSoft strategy include a buy?

news analysis PeopleSoft is banking its late-to-market front-office strategy on a soon-to-be-announced acquisition, analysts say.

The struggling business software maker is preparing to buy a midsized front-office player to boost its offering in the competitive space and analysts say the short list of PeopleSoft's possible targets include Campbell, California-based Saratoga Systems, Austin-based Trilogy, British Columbia-based Pivotal, or Bellevue, Washington-based Onyx.

Any acquisition would follow PeopleSoft CEO Dave Duffield's promise at last month's Gartner Group spring conference that the company would make a key front-office strategy announcement within the next month.

The company has no further comment on any possible acquisition, said PeopleSoft spokesman Andrew McCarthy. PeopleSoft currently has partnerships with Siebel and Vantive. Last year, PeopleSoft said it intends to deliver integrated products with Vantive, a long-term rumored merger partner, and Siebel within the first half of 1999.
