Thanks for the response Evan. It is frustrating to not have these new Apple software products out there. On the other hand, Apple can't afford a mis-step. In that light Apple is following a prudent policy. The downside is that there is always a perception, especially lately that the industry is approaching a significant inflection point. For instance, the significant support for Project Monterey from IBM and others to create a improved unix port to IA-64. One always wonders if Apple had been a year or two ahead so that OS X had been out and well received before now, if OS X might not be a player. Likewise with Sony. Now we have rumors of Sun porting Solaris not only to IA-64 but perhaps to X86. etc. etc.

What if QT had had streaming available last year? The landscape might be completely different. As it is, I'm afraid I'd have to predict that QT 4.0 release will be lost in the tech news noise and not have a great deal of impact in terms of stock price although it may certainly have a technical impact. I personally expect OS X (client version) to be delayed at least into next year, possibly even as late as the 2000 WWDC. Why? Because Apple has, in their infinite loop wisdom, been completely silent seeding the vital portion of OS X, namely the Carbon libraries, to third party developers.

Hate to point out the flaw in this logic, but technically, if Apple has seeded developers with Carbon libraries, then they would be under NDA not to reveal that fact. You are basically assuming that "everything leaks" which isn't true.

Apple has made no public announcements about seeding Carbon libraries, but then again, they made no public announcements about seeding B&W G3s. But they did.
