Laptop stuff:

I have a DELL Inspiron. It has:
1024 * 768 display
A place to put either a second battery or floppy|CD|DVD drive
A touchpad instead of the 'goofy pointing knob in the keys'

I don't know if it is tough. Dell specifies the system will withstand vibration at 0.8 GRMS while operating, which is typical of traveling by air, and 1.3 GRMS while stored with the disk head parked, which is typical of traveling by truck.

For shock, the system is rated at 60"/sec operating and 80"/sec with the disk head parked.

I don't really know what these numbers mean and I don't want to find out the hard way.

Hope this helps, PW.

Andrew,

Here is another two cents.

I have a Micron Transport XKE that I am exceedingly happy with. I have been impressed with the Micron line for some time now and when I am building a box I use a Micron as one of my comparison systems.
They seem to offer a consistent, reliable, durable, fairly priced product.

They have some interesting options; the GoBook "has up to eight hours of battery life"...two cents.

Some things I found on laptops, additional memory from the factory was twice to three times as expensive as aftermarket (probably a similar situation with other parts). Since your laptop has limitations to its upgradability, initially sacrifice now some options you can add later (and perhaps cheaper elsewhere) for the best point you can afford on the processor/video which will determine the far end of your computers usefulness...four cents.

On the detachable monitor, two things: first, a standard 15" flat-panel attached to your laptop, second, I just saw an ad for a computer that was almost a hybrid for laptop/desktop and I am trying to remember where. It is just what you are mentioning I think, though probably overpriced, it will come to me.

To All A Retraction.

When I saw your post on booting off of the Mylex cards Sean I looked forward to having something helpful to add to the conversation, but to my horror when I went to verify the process, no boot! What was I remembering!? Thirty-one is a little early for this. So the gauntlet is down. Mylex in their first response just asked for more info which leads me to believe it is possible, and if it can be done, it will be done! ...oops fell into Yul Brynner mode there.

...now where did I put my other gauntlet??

2 more cents,

I have a Micron Trek and have no complaints with the product. I love the screen. Easy on the eyes after 10 hours a day.

I assume there are not many internal laptop upgrades, so I'd get all the memory\processor you want at the get go.

I use an external mouse, as the touchpad is somewhat awkward to use. So, for traveling I'd suggest maybe a track ball of some sort.

I do know the magazine "pccomputing" has laptop torture tests every so often. They drop 'em, freeze 'em, spill coffee on 'em, and etc.........I'm sure you'd be able to find these results on their site.

As for the detachable monitor, I'm haven't seen anything.

Good luck!

I've just started following this thread and have been trying to wade through the posts. I'm starting out on the multi-monitor learning curve.

Would you or anyone else drop me a description of your dreamer? Any help would be greatly appreciated. PM Ok

Thanks!

Dan
