The domestic economy is still very strong. There are indications that Asia is getting stronger. With that backdrop, a true bear market seems unlikely. I think stocks just got way ahead of themselves and we are seeing major profit taking. A 10% correction at these levels would mean a drop 1060 DOW points. So, I guess we could drop to 9600 and still be within the normal correction standards. In any case, anyone who is holding a stock like BKS for an IPO play had better reconsider, since a prolonged correction or bear market would delay most IPOs.

Rande:

No use kidding ourselves about it...We are entering the next downleg of the bear market... people have been waiting for this for weeks (at least all the technicians) Obvious signs of mania only go to add confirmation to underlying technicals..

One suggestion is to consider it on face value.. that is, believe what the market is telling us (it may be manipulated, but there is little one can do about it: IMO) ... it is saying oils/energy, metals, cyclicals, lodging, semis, health care, RUT, Japan, Brazil, yen, etc..It is also saying sectors are overpriced, Inet, drug, financials, S&P industrial, DOW, DAX, europe, etc...

I think it is wise that you went to cash... I went to metals, IT, oils, and various bowsers (rodneys).. better to avoid the slaughter than to be caught in it... but the bottom feeders will become active as money starts to look for value...after all, you can only turn your back on fundamentals for so long.

Personnally, I began to be "afraid" 2 weeks ago and was operating with a rapid fire trigger, but trying to find opportunities... E.g. today's QMDC.. not a bad move...for a reasonable percentage return.. Sure 100% in 2 days is great but it doesn't last.

I think that you agree in general and are seeking to find value. E.g. One of the rodneys that I have been mentioning began it's breakout today.

Rande, for mutual bear funds, have a look at USPIX (moved 10% today). Recommended it too my step-father last week. Found it (not too hard) on a bear/mutual search. I am not particularly good at elaborating on my scattered DD, and I wish I could give you eloqeunt details....
Good luck and thanks for all your hard work.
Wes

<<<This thread needs discussion of the facts and effects of this past few trading day's dynamics.>>>

With respect to today (yesterday)... my feeling is that most of the money went to cash, which is sitting idle until something establishes direction (doesn't matter what). The dow was up an amazing 270 some points and I think the masses were looking at eachother going, "man, this is crazy!" People began deciding that it was time for some heavy profit taking after the long tear that the dow was on, and before you know it, everyone's shoving eachother in an effort to exit as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, those who attempted to get in were trampled immediately.

. . . . . . . . Don't Say I Didn't Warn Ya' . . . . . . . .

I gave every reader here plenty of warning of exactly what the market would do. . .predictions. . . . from the big surge during the end of March and beginning of April. . . to calling the market top in mid-April and the big sell-off which followed. . . to projecting that there would be no internets or high-techs spared from the broadbased decline, which would last all summer long. . .to predicting the earnings surge in June, which would end in a rapid decline mid-July, even as earnings were still coming out. . . to future calls regarding the coming market bottom.

March 23

. . .maybe even some short plays or something like the Prudent Bear fund for long term shorting thru to about mid-September. . . .at least as a hedge against long-termers. There just isn't a thing to look forward to for this summer that is positive that I can find.

April 5

Believe it or not folks, over the next 3 weeks, I am looking for the exit door on the high-fliers, then looking for long-term short-sell plays thru the summer. I don't believe this current speculative bubble will last more than a few weeks [they rarely do]. . .then as I've said a dozen times, we head into a long slow bear driven summer.

I am thinking that major "smart" money left high flying Inets this morning and fled to rock solid blue chips for the summer. . .as we have discussed doing here over and over.

Today will be the biggest volume trading day in history. . . .I
predicted several months ago that starting around tax day we would be
starting a small bear market through the summer. . . . . I went cash
in the biggest way ever. . .last week when internets were at their
highs.

I sold off many smaller caps over the past 3 weeks when they were
strong. . . but my intent is to buy back the leaders. . . .I won't be
looking to buy back many small caps until sometime in August or
September. Holding SAMs unless I say otherwise.

By the last week of July, I expect things to go South REALLY fast. . . then we go back to our Bear Market within the larger bull market. . .until Sept/October. . . .but don't be the last one to take positions or you will be sorry. . .

Trading through the summer, can destroy all your profits, if you are not REALLY REALLY careful. It is set-up to act just like Vegas. . . a few folks win. . . but the vast majority lose.
