I think that in modern usage the term ad hominem has been broadened to include insults and otherwise gratuitous characterizations. I personally find them offensive and the mark of a rather glaringly unfinished human being. Name-calling is in this ad hominem category, as is the thinly veiled insult in the posted url.
Btw it didn't open, not like E's gem a coupla weeks ago :-D

Any argument aimed at the person is an ad hominem. Generally it is more cleverly phrased than TB's, but the idea is the same. TB just stripped it of all pretense.

I hate it when you get into these great discussions during the day while I'm in the office and nowhere near my reference library. By the time I get home (particularly tonight which won't be until after dinner and show) and consult all my resources and draft up a really erudite and snappy response you'll all be onto a totally new topic.
