A business friend bought an E-Machine three months ago. It runs OK
but he is unable to install software in it. He has been unable to install Laplink, Quicken, Symantec's scheduling software or MS Office.
Dozens of calls to customer support (software and hardware) have failed to resolve the problem. Symantec told him to buy a "real" computer LOL
Installation attempts generate numerous error messages and or crashes.
He is a busy man and has invested at least 100 hours of his valuable time trying to get it running. If you take into account the value of his time, he could have purchased a top of the line P3 and had money to spare
The machine is currently sitting in a closet where it will remain until some hapless person buys it at his next garage sale!

<<Don't forget they offer no service as far as I know, once you buy it you are on your own.>>

Mohan: You are onto something...emachines are part of a craze -- consumers and small businesses seeking out "VALUE PCs." Very little marketing to these audiences talks about quality components, service, and THE TOTAL COST OF OWNERSHIP. IMHO, soon enough consumers will become more sophisticated and DELL will offer the type of products that they will desire -- PCs built like a Lexus (better by design). Many buyers are already willing to pay a little extra for the BEST quality, upgrade path, and service on the market. DELL wins hands down in virtually EVERY category -- from $999 PCs to high end laptops.

Best Regards,

Scott

Mo: I am a good listener, seldom poster, to this thread, but very involved. You are absolutely right about the low-cost or free systems. I have also heard about the "quality" of the E-machines. A friend who runs an ISP says they are using obsolete or rejected modems ($5 each cost basis) and users need much assistance from the ISP. Customer cannot understand why they are getting disconnected, slow connections, etc. Those machines are no threat to Dell. They should stop trying to get something for nothing and GO DELL. Karen
