You misunderstand me. I do not say the ideas promulgated by these shows are beneficial. I merely stated that you will not understand the majority of Americans if you are not fluent with the common cultural entertainments. I believe that idea is defensible.

It is not a question of "watching something you don't want to" but understanding something that is common to a vast majority of people in this country. And you don't have to watch them (I actually said that in one of my posts, did you miss that? ) to keep current with their ideas.

The ideas in sitcoms are not necessarily new ideas, but ideas that have achieved a certain amount of cultural resonance. For example I have found it both interesting and alarming that many individuals trading stocks have been showing up in programs on TV. I use what I see on television as a barometer for testing the cultural waters I may be out of touch with. You are probably out of touch too, you just don't know it- and possibly you don't care. Which is fine, we don't need to argue about that.
