Cable vs DSL will be the VHS vs Betamax of the 21st century.

Not to scare anyone, but the last time the average trade volume was this low (830 right now) was the first of a terrible 3 days. On April 14th I noticed (and posted here) that the ave trade volume was in the low 800's, when it is usually about 930. On the 14th the stock open at about 152, and dropped about 34 points by the close on the 17th. I don't think there is any correlation, but if there is....

PS- I am buying before the close today, so I don't want to hear any "short" comments!

Can you guarantee that it will be faster than cable once cable is upgraded? My only point is that AOL will be involved in cable as there are no guarantees. Why do you think AOL was involved in the bidding for UMG? If AOL thought DSL would be so dominant, would they really want a stake in UMG?

I have been trying to assuage people on this thread that many are overreacting to the T-UMG deal. There will be a breakthrough soon-either with T or from Congress. ATHM came up with a great idea. AOL can take the idea and use their customer base and make it bigger.

Dustin, I don't think you understand ATHM well enough to reach such conclusions. Locally I have an option of both ATHM and DSL. When doing side-by-side comparisons I found (in my local market) that ATHM is cheaper than DSL and is quite a bit faster (10 times faster). When looking at DSL speed keep in mind that pay more for the faster access. The $40 price range is typically for 640K access only.

Yes, the speed will slow down some on ATHM if you have lots of folks in your community accessing the net at the same time. But, most recently upgraded cable plants have been designed to handle a significant number of multiple users. You won't be able to get always get the 20mb potential speed, but 6-8 mb is very typical.

I have had ATHM for several months and have yet to experience an outage or slow connection. I am sure DSL is also reliable.

I don't understand why you, and others, keep narrowly thinking that there will be one broadband winner. Wrong! There will be many, many winners--cable, DSL and wireless (to some extent). The potential reach of each broadband delivery system is limited geographically. The demand is extremely high and there will be several successful providers of high speed access.

Steeny, I trash ATHM because I don't see the benefits of cable of DSL. As far as I can
see, the ONLY problem with DSL is the 3 mile radius from the phone company for
availability. Other than that, I truly believe that DSL has much more growth capability
than cable for the simple fact that DSL doesn't get bogged down when there is heavy
traffic. If I had a choice between the two, and the prices were the same, wouldn't you
choose DSL? Am I missing something or is ATT missing something :)?

The REBOCS are too slow in deployment is all. Give them a kick:-)

Yes, I would. But the prices are *NOT* the same
Cable costs $40/month. DSL I hear is about $50-$200 and not even
as generally available as cable.
