I've tried "Skin So Soft" with only moderate success.

Ever tried Old Time Woodsman's Fly Dope? I don't know if it is still around, but I used to use it hiking in the Adirondacks and it worked like a charm.

Also had good results with Bug Ban on my wrist.

Skin so soft works well against mosquitos, but not blackflies. We're back in Southern Ontario now, so it's not a big problem. The only times I see groups of mosquitos are at the cottage, and at my parents' bush lot. DEET isn't recommended for small children (big ones either for that matter) <<gg>>
