Japan Stockpiles Oil For Y2K

<< Japan has taken other steps as well, such as stockpiling a half-year's supply of oil and printing up an extra $330 billion worth of yen banknotes to hand out in case of a run on banks, Kondo said. >>

foxnews.com

I would think that more countries than Japan are stockpiling, which should lead to continued oil price strength this year and probably much weaker prices next year.

Probably true of most commodities as companies temporarily move from JIT (just in time) to CYA (cover your butt) inventory.

Saudi June Supply Cuts Signal Price Resolve

<< Saudi Arabia's deep cut in sales of crude worldwide for June show the kingdom's determination to maintain strict export limits despite the recent rise in oil prices, Saudi crude customers said on Wednesday.

State Saudi Aramco's swingeing 35 percent sales cut below standard contract volumes to major European customers targets the region where Saudi crude profit margins are at their lowest.

Saudi Arabia confirmed its intent to stop the key Atlantic Basin market from lurching back into oversupply by cutting export volumes to the United States by 21 percent. >>

This should keep oil prices up.

Oil & Gas Info\ Kerm: I am sure other would like to join me in thanking you for an excellent and honest appraisal of the whole Sector.

It has a wealth of detail for every one.

I bailed out of AEC/AXL and CNQ last week as I believed they may be in for a correction later.

Hello Kerm, Really enjoy reading your posts and daily letter. Keep up the good work. Has your opinion changed regarding Upton? If we linger in that $16.50 to $18 range, Wouldn't Upton be an ideal candidate for a nice little run?

Kerm, it appears today that the "Question and Answer Forum" in CANOE Money's Oil and Gas segment has disappeared. And just when I was about to ask a question about "sour" gas. How big a problem is it for Canadian ngas producers? How about any environmental problems that it causes? Finally, what about the processes and costs involved with "sweetening" sour gas?

I like your review. Why however is there the suspicion that oil will fall back to 16.50 later this year. What if any impact has the Kosovo war had on oil prices -- will it have the same effect on oil prices it did during the gulf war if we send in soldiers?

Kerm / Northrock

Interesting that you list this one. Operationally the deal with Unocal is a definitive answer to a few problems -- in particular, deep pockets to make the debt situation more palatable. I was struck by an analyst's comment, though, that suggested that Northrock might now end up as a sort of orphan in the Canadian oil patch. If people don't know how to deal with the 50% that isn't owned by Unocal, that's a possibility. Anyway, that's what led me to tender the remainder of my shares. After having sold half my position in '97, having them take out 80%+ leaves me with a tag end, to dispose of when convenient.

I guess I just decided that the closer to plain vanilla a situation is, the easier for the market to wrap its head around. That seems important after such a tough market the last 18 or so months.

waterous.com

Not sure how long links are good for, current link gives general overview of some of the NWT fields including area where Chevron's K-29 (Purcell) is located, Pointed Mountain, Kotaneelee, Beaver River and Forest/Wincan Flett Rapids.

Wintershall is attempting to offload some assets.
