Robert:

I think that kind of combination would make alot of sense -- and maybe it will be propelled by the US West-Global Crossing and recent AT&T-Cable deals. BEL seems to be at the forefront of deploying DSL in its territory. And their wireless property would be an important addition to WCOM's portfolio. And, as limtex has pointed out in his comments on the Nextel negotiations, I'm sure Bernie could find lots of fat in BEL to be trimmed to build synergies and "accretive" earnings impact for WCOM.

I'd love to see WCOM solidify it's recent gains and get the stock going again -- and then a combination with BEL may make alot of sense. I'll remember where I heard it first!

Agreed. How much would you pay if you were WCOM?

BEL/WCOM not likely IMHO. Observations that lead me to his conclusion:

WCOM out bid GTE for MCI. GTE/BEL cleared by FCC. GTE officials will still have powerful positions in the merged GTE/BEL entity. GTE culture anything but progressive (ala WCOM). BEL culture not all that progressive either. It may be a good fit for business logistics, but I do not see these entrenched mgmt teams giving up power to a telecom "renegade" like Mr. Ebbers.

Also, the DOJ will not allow BEL into the long distance market until they allow local access. To my knowledge this is still an issue. Would a WCOM buyout be a way around the regulators?
