The problem seems to be that we have events in front of us which are perceived by our ex-enemies and our present enemies as evidence of almost imperialist intention on our part - the expansion of Nato being the most obvious, compounded by Nato's new role as an offensive force for 'moral good' - ignoring international law and national sovereignty. It's a bad precedent, and would make it impossible for us to take the high ground in any future invasion of Afghanistan for example.

I have never argued that the means we have been discussing were intended to gain American hegemony over the world; that is rr's territory, not mine. I think the people you are describing honestly believed, in many cases, that they were doing what was right and necessary to combat the Communist threat. I also think that their perceptions were severely limited by distorted information and ideological filters. I also think that these are not valid excuses for the actions which were taken. When you take it on yourself to make decisions and take actions on behalf of citizens of other countries, people who have no way of influencing you, you take on a huge responsibility. Part of that responsibility is making damned sure you know what your people are doing, and that you assess all the possible consequences of those acts, not just the convenient ones. When you put rationalizations like "they aren't at the right stage for democracy" and "harsh measures are necessary" up against the bloody reality where those words hit the ground, you start to see the consequences of self-imposed blindness.
